Cleaning Up Your Blog–Click To Nowhere

“Your link doesn’t work,” she texted, “It happens to me all the time.”

While I sure it didn’t happen to her all the time, it did seem to happen to her a lot. When this particular friend stops by my blog (which isn’t often), she seems to be drawn to all of my non-working links.

As soon as I got to a computer, I sat down and tested all of my links, and I’ll be darned if she wasn’t right. I hate when that happens. I had a link that didn’t work. And just for kicks, I clicked through the other links to make sure they didn’t 404 me.

404

I’m not sure if the link ever worked or if the url changed or if I entered it wrong or if it was a combination of all of those. I just know that it didn’t work. And while it was sorta irksome that this particular friend always–and I mean always–found the unlinked link, I worried about those readers who clicked it, went no where and then Xed right out of my blog for good.

So I now make sure that I check all visible links once a week. It’s a little bit time consuming, but I’d rather *I* get the 404 than my friend text me that she’d been 404’d … again.

  1. My mom is the one who always finds the errors on my blog. She rarely comments but will send me emails like “Check the spelling on ‘reign.'” By the way, she knows full well the way it should be spelled and that I didn’t spell it that way. *sigh* Although it irks my pride, I’m grateful–like you–that someone catches it so that others don’t just click off never to return!
