That’s an excellent question. Why on Earth do I blog? Why do I feel the need to write endlessly about my thoughts, feelings, triumphs, failures…even my food? What’s the point of all of this?
It’s the same reason why so many people in the world have created accounts on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, WordPress, etc. And it’s also the same reason why the guy at the table to my right just took about 5 minutes to capture juuuuust the right photo of his chips, guacamole, and margarita at this Dallas airport (hi from my layover, by the way!). I touched on this in my 3rd post as your Blogger of the Month: “Don’t miss it.” And that’s really all it is; I just don’t want to miss it. And to my suspicion, neither do you.
Ever since I was a wee little Katherine, I’ve always felt this sense of urgency to stop and soak in the happiness around me. I don’t necessarily know why, or where that came from. My parents have always been incredibly positive people who enjoy life to its fullest, so they’re a big reason I do that. I also think that it’s partly due to an ever-present astonishment for how quickly life can be taken away, and how much good is surrounding us yet how easy it can be to instead focus on the negative things in our lives.
So…that’s why I blog.
My personal blog, Newlie, is spelled to preference and lovingly written through new adventures and epiphanies that I feel are worth sharing. When Sean and I were engaged and moved into our first home together, I created the blog simply as an attempt to capture that special time that I wished I could bottle up and keep forever. I wanted to remember every new adventure, recipe, DIY project, and travel experience I could. It ultimately turned into a love of writing that I didn’t know I had in me.
Oh yeah…it was also terrifying.
The first year, thoughts often took over like: Is anyone even reading this?…Is this post about how to make homemade strawberry jam completely ridiculous?…or…Awesome. Just found like 903 spelling & grammatical errors. Way to goooo, Kath!” Luckily, between the blogging community and my dear friends and family – I felt like it was worth it…especially when I remembered that it was for me. Just me. I remembered that it helped me to not miss it.
Now it holds me accountable for truly capturing my life in the most positive light; a literary album of the joy surround me, how hard I’ve worked, and how incredibly blessed I am thanks to the hard work of my own family, extended family, and husband.
Life is too precious. Don’t you agree?
Friends, I am so thankful for this opportunity to have been your Blogger of the Month for April. To be highlighted among published authors, hard working mamas, and inspirational entrepreneurs is such a joy and honor. As a contributor to this wonderful community, I only ask that you take my past few posts to heart. Maybe you’ll develop some new daily/weekly/monthly practices to soak in the day via all 5 senses, to push yourself out of your comfort zone and achieve something remarkable, or simply to write down your favorite things in an endless list.
Thanks for reading, and happy writing!
