Spring Break 2013 ended cold and colorful for my family this year. While most of my friends and family were ending their vacations in Hawaii, Florida, or stuck in a blizzard in Colorado, I opted for a staycation in Oklahoma and pretty much stayed home except for venturing to the Ardmore area- my hometown of Wilson, Oklahoma toward the end. I hadn’t been “home” to see my parents since Christmas and my children were needing some Papa, Nana, cousin, acreage, four wheelin’ and golf cart time. It’s amazing what time away from the country does to kids. My kids are citified. Seriously.
On Saturday morning we woke up gray, cold, misty, and early for Ardmore’s first annual Color Me Crazy Run hosted by the H.F.V. Wilson Community Center. The run consisted of a 1 mile fun run and a 5K. My Moma had put together a team of 13 family members, leaving me the job of choosing a team name. I chose “Run or Dye Trying”. Some of us ran and we all definitely got dyed trying.
A color run splashes you with colored corn starch from sweatband to sneaker before, during and after the race. There were approximately 900 participants at this particular event which raised money for HFV Wilson Community Center’s after school and summer programs for children.
I have to admit, I was extremely proud of my own children. My daughter, age 6, was the first in our family to cross the finish line in the 1 mile and my son, age 12, was the first in the 5K. This was their first time to participate in an event like this. And if they want to do it again, I will have to be much more conditioned to join them.
The next scheduled Color Run event is in Tulsa, OK on April 20, 2013.
Did you do anything crazy and colorful during Spring Break?
